BODY SPACE TIME CONVERSATION SERIES | ZULEIKHA CHAUDHURI

The Foundation for Indian Contemporary Art and Gati Dance Forum organised an evening of conversation with artist Zuleikha Chaudhuri as part of the Body Space Time Conversation Series on February 22, 2018 at the FICA Reading Room.

The Body Space Time Conversations series is designed to invite a range of practitioners into the studio, engaging them in a conversation about performance and its intersection with other disciplines. The conversation series is part of BODY SPACE TIME, an ongoing 4-month certificate course in dance technique and choreography, running from Jan - May 2018 at Gati Dance Forum. The conversation series populates a context for the participants of the Body Space Time course, allowing them to engage with creative processes through their own practice and a wider dialogue. It also creates a space for practitioners to share their practice with the larger public, triggering a critical discourse that links various methodologies and forms.

On its first week, the series featured Zuleikha Chaudhuri, who spoke about her her body of practice, with a particular focus on her trajectory in the direction of performance making. Zuleikha is a theatre director and lighting designer based out of New Delhi. Her work essentially investigates the nature of performance. It explores how images are constructed and experienced: the relationship of the text and performer, the dynamic between performer and space, and finally, the role of the spectator in the performative experience. Side by side, it is also an exploration of space and the part it plays in the construction and experience of narratives. Her works have been shown in performance festivals, galleries, and exhibitions in the United States, Germany, France, Belgium, Vienna, South Africa, South Korea, China, Japan, The Netherlands, Pakistan, and India.
