Featuring Elika Assumi and Anna Moulton, this panel discussion will centre around writing, books and publishing across Northeast India and Australia, with specific reference to geography and demography within these regions. The conversation, moderated by Mary Therese Kurkalang, will explore perspectives on writing, poetry, representation, policy, and collaboration.
About the speakers:
Elika Assumi, hailing from Nagaland, is an Assistant Professor at the National Law University, Meghalaya (NLU Meg), focusing on the distinct and subjective narratives of India's Northeastern region. Her scholarly pursuits revolve around unravelling the nuances of this culturally rich terrain through the medium of literature and academic discourse.
Anna Moulton (she/her) has worked with First Nations writers, storytellers and artists from around Australia for more than 20 years. She was most recently CEO of Magabala Books, Australia’s leading Indigenous publishing house, for almost 10 years. She has a background in arts management and law, specialising in strategic planning and business development, organisational change, advocacy and policy development.
Mary Therese Kurkalang has worked in Indian and International Publishing and Culture Sectors for close to 30 years, with a focus on the Northeastern region of India for over a decade. She is currently the Festival Director of the Shillong Literary Festival, Co-Founder of the Rachna Books Writers Residency, and consultant to The Himalayan Fellowship for Creative Practitioners. Her background is in arts management and conflict resolution.
