This set of performances by the members of the FICA Club at Deepalaya School, Kalkaji extension, marks the closing of the two-year long engagement on art and experiential education by artist Sreejata Roy as part of FICA's Learning with Art project at Deepalaya School.

FICA's Learning with Art is a long term project that started in 2009 in collaboration with Deepalaya School, Kalkaji extension. It seeks to use art resources and creative teaching methods in approaching education at the middle school level. It’s specifically aimed at children from disadvantaged backgrounds and first generation learners to expand their field of engagement beyond the school curriculum. The project aims to develop a transformative pedagogy using art, enhance the experience of creative learning by emphasizing on participation and process rather than on individual output. It also brings artists and other creative professionals to directly engage with the students through workshop style modules.

The project over the last two years has been facilitated by artist Sreejata Roy. Over this time she has identified and worked on areas such as exploring the everyday, the body and movement, and on certain aspects of sound, through writing, reading, dialogue, illustrations and performance-based exercises. Working with the FICA Club children on a bi-weekly basis Roy has been able to engage them in a continuous dialogue that allows them to explore their lives through lived experiences. These 6th and 7th graders will be performing for the public for the first time now and hope to take this project into their neighbourhoods in the future. The performances will be followed by interaction where you can meet and discuss the project with the participants.

Sreejata Roy is an artist with a particular interest in community-related projects. Her recent practice involves working with young people and connecting ideas of public spaces in the low income colonies in New Delhi. She received the FICA Public Art Grant for her project "The Park" at Dakshinpuri, New Delhi. She has also worked on exploring community and public spaces in other parts of India and abroad. She has participated in many exhibitions, residencies, workshops at national and international level, and will be holding her solo exhibition in New Delhi in May 2014.
