IN/CUBE Residency: Anand Shenoy and Shoili Kanungo

Extending the possibilities of the in/cube residency at Project_Space into more collaborative, evocative formats for artistic practice, we announced two additional inhabitants who occupied the FICA Reading Room through the month of October.

Anand Shenoy is a cartoonist and visual artist, whose practice primarily revolves around comics and self publishing. He likes to make comics about people who think they have one problem in life when they actually have several.

Shoili Kanungo is an artist based in New Delhi. She loves drawing stories with images, words, or the two combined. Her work draws from the dullness of everyday, the things people say, snippets from the news, city walks, our emotional lives, quantum physics, mythology, surveillance in society – nothing is off limits. The personal, the political, the subconscious world of forms, they mingle. Shoili holds a Bachelors degree in Philosophy, a Masters degree in Design, and has studied intermediate level Japanese in Tokyo. Her picture stories have been published in journals such as The Indian Quarterly, The New Enquiry, and Scroll. And her paintings have been exhibited in Fumetto Festival, Lucerne (2019) and Sanaa Festival, Adelaide (2022).

We invited Anand and Shoili to consider a parallel (slightly more deconstructed) inhabitation of the FICA Reading Room, initiating cross-conversations and engagements, spanning different audiences, structures, and forms of making.

Open Studio: Anand Shenoy and Shoili Kanungo

Anand and Shoili worked out of the FICA Reading Room for the a few weeks, developing their individual projects and sharing their practices with us and with each other. We were very excited to have been able to be part of their process, invited audiences to come take a sneak peek at the things that were brewing as part of the in/cube residency at Project_Space. The Open Studio presented works-in-progress by both artists, begun during their residency, and showcased some of their earlier projects as well.
