The recipient of FICA Research Fellowship 2008was Satyanand Mohan for his research titled “The Archaeology of Urban Life” with focus on artist Gigi Scaria’s work. Mohan was chosen by theofficial jury Dr. Parul Dave Mukherjee, Dean, School of Art and Aesthetics, along with Vidya Shivadas from FICA.
Dr. Mukherjee declared, “Sathyanand's proposal was most carefully worked out with a specific focus on a contemporary artist, Gigi Scaria and a broader engagement with the contemporary art scene at the same time; a proposal that could be realized within the stipulated period of time. The manner in which he had articulated the theoretical framework showed an admirable grasp of the dynamics of contemporary Indian art and the arguments made were lucid without recourse to jargons and bombastic claims. I envisage that the work of this kind will help in filling in the lacuna that exists today in the field of contemporary art criticism and writing.”
Satyanand Mohan has a BFA in Painting from the Govt. College of Fine Art, Trivandrum, and a MFA in Printmaking from M.S. University of Baroda. In addition to practicing as an artist, he has also been writing on art for several years. He currently lives and works in Baroda.
