5 April - 20 April 2024

We are excited to announce our current inhabitant of Project_Space: Pagal Canvas with their launch and exhibition of a graphic novel ‘Jai Kali Android Wali’ by Pritam Das.

JAI KALI ANDROID WALI (2023) is a graphic novel by Pritam Das, published and produced by PagalCanvas which brings together the real and the mythical set in an urban Indian context, while the author narrates the story of an artist’s struggle to sustain himself through teaching. The project was made possible through the support of the Generator Cooperative Art Production Fund 2022-23.

PagalCanvas launched "Jai Kali Android wali" by Pritam Das with an exhibition at Project Space. The exhibit opened on April 5th, followed by a walk-through led by Mohit Mahato the next day. Mohit shared insights into PagalCanvas's genesis and showcased their diverse publications, ranging from comics to zines. He spotlighted select comics from PagalCanvas Backyard's extensive catalog of over 30 titles. The walk-through provided an exciting glimpse into PagalCanvas's ongoing projects and the collaborative effort behind the ‘Jai Kali Android Wali’ showcase.

On view till 20 April 2024.

PagalCanvas is an independent, non-profit publishing collective based in Bangalore, established in 2017 that prints art books, comics, and zines. It was started by Mohit Mahato and Anand Shenoy within the premises of College of Fine Arts, Karnataka Chitrakala Parishad Bangalore. Their intention was to start a visual publishing house to compensate for the lack of collective effort within the art college. The initial idea was to explore zines, comics, and other narrative print mediums, in interaction with physical print culture, manual printmaking techniques and trying to build a community through producing printed material and circulating them at a minimal price.

In 2021, Mohit opened ‘Pagal Canvas Backyard,’ a print studio dedicated to alternative manual printing techniques, creating/discussing/publishing comics and other sequential formats. The space allows for printing comics with screen printing and plate litho printing techniques, as well as residencies for cartoonists and artists hosting talks and open studio presentations. Some of our noted projects have been making graphic portfolios for print projects like Awagami Papers, IPEP & Bangalore Print Exchangee etc . In addition, Mohit has conducted workshops on cyanotype, screen printing & plate lithography for both private & commercial ventures. Pagal Canvas Backyard also hosts an internship/residency annually providing young artists with an open studio for any independent project they wish to produce along with their internship.
