Mold to Modulation: dusting the Fingerprints | Karthik K G

13 July - 12 August 2017,
Vadehra Art Gallery, D-53 Defence Colony, New Delhi

Karthik K G received the FICA Inlaks Goldsmiths Scholarship in 2015-16 to pursue an MRES at the Curatorial/Knowledge Programme at Goldsmiths, University of London.  His initial enquiry into the increasing importance of codes and algorithms in contemporary societies, their impact ranging from the everyday use of digital technologies to new modes of knowledge production,  resulted in a thesis titled Unique Identification and the Dividual.

The display at FICA Homepage will explore the methodology carried through the research, weaving together various materials that involve recent debates on biometrics and UID, including the multi-layered historical references to the fictional iterations of similar techniques found in the films. Like detectives, cops, murderers, investigative journalists, mathematicians and psychos are often seen in films working on the evidence-board filled with clues, newspaper clips, handwritten notes, names, dates, photographs, portraits and locations pinned and linked with network of crisscrossing red thread to map various pieces of the puzzle, the display will piece together its research on techniques of identification. Showcasing this crazy wall in movies, a rare sight in real life, is a modus operandi used for advancing the story by visualising the plot to the audience at a crucial juncture.
