Connecting the Lines - artist-led workshops on drawing

FICA is organizing ‘Connecting the line’, a series of artist-led interactive workshops on drawing for adults. This series focuses on drawing as an integral constituent of art and emphasizes on ‘looking and thinking’ as key components of artistic practice.

Each session will have the artist making a presentation on their own practice, methods and style, thereby opening the discussion to questions about their view on the subject of drawing itself and its position in their works as well as in the works exhibited. This will be followed by drawing exercised by the participants and will conclude with a group discussion focusing on critical feedback on their works,

Designed in collaboration with Gallery Espace and the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art, in Delhi, this series extends FICA’s ongoing efforts to connect art lovers of the city with professionals, inspire amateur and emerging artists, and provide a space for interactive learning in the arts.

This series of workshops have been designed around three important exhibitions currently on show in the capital – Gallery Espace’s ‘Drawing 2014 – 7 decades of Indian drawing’ at Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts;  Vadehra Art Gallery’s ‘A. Ramachandran: A retrospective – Drawings, Sketches and Studies’ at Lalit Kala Akademi  showcasing 1500 drawing of the senior artist; and KNMA’s ‘An Unfinished Portrait: Vignettes from the KNMA collection’ containing historical works from modernist, Bengal school. In each of these exhibitions the approach to historically engaging with the practice of drawing has been differently and interestingly conceived by the various curators, thus allowing the participant/audience to enter the domain of draughtsmanship from multiple ways – as process, as sketch, as abstraction etc.

Format of each workshop: Each session will begin with the artist making a presentation on their practice, methods and style, followed by practical exercises at the exhibition site led by the artist including sketching, live studies and more.
